Murals

Murals have been an important part of the culture and arts of DeLand since the early 1990's. The Mainstreet DeLand Association established the DeLand Mural committee around 1994. Their Vision was to take people on an historical stroll "a Mural Walk" that would unfold along our streets like the pages of a giant book. The DeLand Historic Mural Walk outlines the murals within the City, the story behind them and where they're located. You can review and download the Mural Walk Brochure and enjoy a stroll through DeLand History!

"Pioneers at the Parce Land" (a snapshot from the Mural Walk Brochure is shown to the right). This was the first mural in DeLand, painted on the Wells Building (The old Half Times Building) at 145 North Woodland Boulevard by the artist Perigo. It was completed in December of 1996. This mural depicts the Parce Land Hotel during the 1880's. The mural was designed from an 1890 photograph. In it, travelers wait at the train depot to take a ride to Cabbage Bluff for their steamship ride back north.

PURPOSE

The City outlines murals as artistic representations that are, typically, a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, hand-tiled, or digitally printed image on the exterior wall of a building that does not contain any commercial message (i.e., does not advertise a business). When carefully developed and approved, murals enhance the City’s aesthetic value, sense of place and wellbeing. Murals can also serve to introduce and welcome visitors to the City while illustrating the City’s past, present and vision for the future.

The following information is also outlined within the Mural Art Information Sheet.
